I'm developing a habit of reading books before the movie adaptation is released. Last week or so, I read Lovely Bones amongst other books and this week, I read Push. Both books are depressing, but riveting and involve you emotionally. Push is bittersweet, but a good read nonetheless.
Here's a poem by the protagonist of the novel, Precious (she is a functioning illiterate):
everi mornin
by precious j.
everi mornin
i write
a poem
before i go to
school
marY had a little lamb
but i got a kid
an HIV
that follow me
to school
one day.
Up there's the trailer for the movie adaptation. I'm actually bracing myself for disappointment (as now with Lovely Bones) since both books are so graphic that it'd be hard to capture the emotions in the book. Both of the trailers feature additional parts that weren't in the book to amp the intensity of the film. Whuteva!

I don't think I can watch a movie with Monique in it and take the thing seriously. I'd read the book though, if I had time...and patience.
The book is less than 200 pages long. And Monique isn't a serious actress but she has been critically acclaimed at Sundance for her portrayal.
